Flags of Touhou: Koishi Komeiji by GreatPaperWolf Flags of Touhou: Koishi Komeiji by GreatPaperWolf
Now that uni finals are over I actually have more time for these, hurrah!

This is my design of a flag for Koishi Komeiji, the extra stage boss of Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism. She is a satori, a youkai with the ability to read others' minds. Koishi unfortunately has probably one of the more darker pasts of the Touhou cast. Due to her ability she was hated and feared by others, and attempted to close off her ability to read minds, which resulted in her also losing her conscious self. Koishi operates on subconscious thought alone, and possesses the ability to manipulate the subconscious of others. How this is interpreted seems to vary from person to person. Superficially, she seems to act as any other Gensokyo resident would, albeit in a more careless and carefree manner. I suppose though that beneath that, Koishi is something similar to a robot. She is a being that can imitate love and laughter convincingly but in actuality, the part of her that would actually express those emotions is completely dead.

Even when she stands directly in front of you, you cannot be aware of Koishi's presence without her allowing it. People who do notice Koishi will forget about her immediately upon her leaving. Those who remember her as Satori's younger sister won't forget about her, as is the case with most of the major characters. Because of her lack of consciousness, she is the only being whose mind can't be read by her sister.

Komeiji (古明地) is written with three kanji, for "old", "bright", and "earth". Koishi is written in hiragana, and is commonly interpreted as 小石, "pebble" or 恋思, written with "love" and "thought."

1. Black is inscrutability and the subconscious, something mysterious and unknown to pretty much everyone who isn't Koishi. White represents vacancy and emptiness. Gold represents pleasure and optimism. Green represents a "natural state" of mind.

2. For no particular reason, flag is modeled on the flag of Valencia, an autonomous community of Spain.

3. On the right side of the flag, seven stripes for Koishi being the seventh (extra stage) boss. Three white stripes to represent the id, ego, and super-ego, which comprises the psyche according to Sigmund Freud. Four green stripes to represent the Five Stages of Grief, minus the last one, Acceptance. Poor Koishi...

4. Three diamonds to represent Koishi's 3rd Eye, a physical eye externally attached to her body by veins, which in the past allowed her to read others' minds. Unlike her sister, who also possesses one, Koishi's 3rd Eye is sewn shut.

Might it not have been more appropriate to make the "third" eye a different colour (perhaps some shade of blue)?
Regardless, it's good to see you've returned to flaggery (Vexillography, whatever).

Freshman year can be tough, but it seems like you've got your priorities straight as far as that's concerned.
However, as someone who burned out after 3 years in Mathematics, I must warn against complacency.

In other news, I'm glad you've decided to bring the filtered versions back. I use these flags as wallpapers, and they really feel somewhat flat without the filters.

Definitely a good point, since Koishi's third eye actually is blue, and her shirt buttons (which the diamonds are modeled on) are also blue. I had to come to a compromise though, and blue didn't seem to compliment the colors black, yellow and green, which are absolutely necessary to identify Koishi. But now that you mention it, I wish I could pull off adding blue for the third eye. It's just that I don't think I'm able to do it.

Don't worry, I take that advice you've given me 100% seriously. While I do enjoy this hobby, I'm thankful my parents have impressed upon me how much more important my studies are.

Thanks again, I appreciate your comments!
