Flags of Touhou: Utsuho Reiuji (Alternate)

Description

This is an alternate design of a flag for Utsuho Reiuji, sixth stage boss of Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism. She is a raven who, through consuming part of Yatagarasu's spirit, has the ability to manipulate nuclear fusion. Her goal in TH11 is to create a new hell by using her power on the surface world, and taking over Gensokyo. Utsuho (空) is written with the character for "sky, emptiness", and Reiuji (霊烏路) is written with the kanji for "spirit", "raven", and "road."

1. Utsuho's colors (red, black, green, white) are the Pan-Arab colors, so this flag is a small homage to my favorite rendition of her theme by C-CLAYS. Green represents naivete. White represents the divine aspect, black represents the raven, and red represents energy.

2. A tricolour band of green, white and black to represent the three legs of Yatagarasu, a god of oriental mythology often depicted as a three-legged crow. The manifestation of Utsuho's power comes from her carrying a part of Yatagarasu inside her. The tricolour stripes are in a 1:2:1 ratio, like the flag of Spain. Conveniently, the flags of many Arab states are similar, but with stripes of equal height.

3. There are two ways to view the center symbol. One is to interpret it as the crescent and star, presently a common symbol used to represent the Muslim faith, though it was first used in the 1800s as a national symbol for the Ottoman Empire (notably a non-Arab state). The other, more relevant image is that of the sun and moon. The rays form the silhouette of the sun, and the red circle containing the star is the moon. This is meant to represent a solar eclipse, or as many world mythologies depict it, the consumption of the sun. The symbol also represents the fusion of Utsuho and Yatagarasu as one, since no matter which of the two interpretations you see, it is always the image of the sun (star) and moon (crescent).

A fun flag to make, since Utsuho has no shortage of symbolism surrounding her. It did make it hard to choose what symbols to use, so I settled on just one aspect that summed up her character to keep things simple.

Have to ask, how do you make that effect appear on the flag?
